First cat down
Socks, the White House Cat from 1993 to 2001, died last week at somewhere between the ages of 18 and 20. He was euthanized due to cancer near his home in Maryland, where he spent his last few years with former presidential secretary Betty Currie. Socks lived an extraordinary life for a cat, going from homelessness to an honored position in the White House. He was a media darling and a spokescat for pets everywhere.

Hollywood eat your heart out!
Even the cheesiest novelist wouldn't dare write this one: Greece's most notorious criminal, kidnapper Vassilis Paleokostas, breaks out of a maximum security prison by grabbing onto a rope ladder dangling from an accomplice's hijacked helicopter, as guards open fire and a woman shoots back from the chopper. This happens as he's being transported to a hearing to face charges related to breaking out of jail in 2006 by grabbing onto a rope ladder being dangled from a helicopter hijacked by his brother, bank robber Nikos Paleokostas, hailed by some poor Greeks as a modern day Robin Hood. There are already half a dozen Facebook fan clubs. Sadly dull video of the departing chopper here. The pilot, found tied up, and four prison guards have been arrested.

Hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is now every librarian's hero, too. When the US Airways pilot's plane ended up at the bottom of the Hudson River on Jan. 15, so did a book he had checked out from the library at California State University, Fresno, through his local library near Danville.
Sullenberger contacted library officials and asked for an extension and waiver of overdue fees because the book was in the airliner's cargo hold.
Fresno State library officials said they were struck by Sullenberger's sense of responsibility and did him one better: they're waiving all fees, even lost book fees, and placing a template in the replacement book dedicating it to him.
The book's subject? Professional ethics.
